Small Change...Big Impact in the Dining Room

I'm still in the midst of my post-holiday tweaking.  As you may recall, I made some changes to the finishes in the dining room, just prior to Thanksgiving.  Thus, the change here is minimal...yet, it packs a punch!

I took away two of the side chairs; and brought in the red camelback settee from the office.  It creates an intimate seating arrangement, at the dining table.  The table, chairs, and china cabinet are antiques that belonged to my grandparents. I am currently using the sideboard as my foyer table. The chairs are smaller in scale, as opposed to the oversized Tuscan chairs you've seen in this room before.  Thus, the settee seats two perfectly, without overcrowding the arrangement.

I love how the wall color changes from day to night. During the day, the room is very bright and cheery. At night, it becomes much more intimate.

I have always loved the look of a settee or banquette around a dining table. In fact, I did this look a few years ago; and everyone always wanted to sit on the settee for dinner! The lines of this piece are clean and classic; however, it adds a slightly modern touch to the room.

For the centerpiece, I brought in the large arrangement that was on the foyer table; and replaced it with crystal rose bowls and candlesticks, that I shared with you here.  It now adds drama and color to the dining room.  I made a new, miniature version for the entry table.  I like to keep my florals and colors consistent, to maintain the flow, from room to room.

This is the view, entering the dining room, from the foyer...I love the pattern, created by the lights, on the ceiling.  That's what I call a "free" medallion! LOL!  To the right of the entry, is a small accent table with a pair of topiaries and an accent lamp.

(I am in the process of rearranging the iron shelf, to the left.)

Here is a daylight shot, with the table and settee turned lengthwise, in the room. Just another option.
The wine storage is just to the left.

As you can see, the change was a simple one; but, the punch of red makes a huge statement. It keeps the antique, traditional furnishings from becoming too 'stuffy'; and provides a great punch of color! I love the mix of the two styles! For more design images and inspiration, using settees in a dining room, check out this post at Developing Designs

Well, that's it for now. Like most of you, I have a laundry list of projects that I'd like to tackle.  I just have to figure out where I'd like to begin!

Thanks so much for stopping by; and have a great day!

Sometimes, I Just Have to Laugh at Myself...

Happy Sunday! I hope you've had a great weekend! We spent the first part of the weekend returning the last of the Christmas boxes to the attic; and then, I was in decorating mode...again! Sometimes, I just have to laugh at myself.  A couple of days ago, I posted my mantel, coffee table and entry table. Well, wouldn't you know it? They didn't stay that way! Lol!!  We all felt that something was missing. Sometimes, after you live with things for a few days, they lose some of their initial appeal. In trying to declutter after Christmas, I took away the heart of what makes our home...the deep rich COLOR!

So, the throw came back to the coffee table:

And, I made new arrangements for the mantel and the entry table.  We LOVE the crystal rose bowls that I added to the entry, but it lacked the colors that we so love.  So, here is the revised version:

The mantel is still the same...I just replaced the hydrangeas with a more colorful arrangement.  The hydrangeas have a new home, on the desk, in my office.

A Fresh Start

Now that the Christmas decorations are all put away, I can really look at my home with a fresh perspective.  Have you noticed that once the decorations are gone, your home can feel a little bare? To be honest, it doesn't really bother me, because it allows me to look at things from a different point of view.  It's like I have a blank slate to work with. Suddenly, everything feels clean and fresh! I tend to go just a little lighter with my decor after the holidays.  I minimize the coffee table decor first; and then, I rearrange the mantel.

This year, I want to incorporate natural greens and flowers, as opposed to a lot of the silk florals.  For some reason, I have a new obsession with succulents. I just love the array of colors available, as well as the texture that they provide. And the fact that they are low maintenance just seals the deal!

I definitely want to keep the Tuscan vibe going, but I want a more organic feel.  I'll continue to use lots of warm colors, inspired by the Tuscan countryside; but, I'd like to add more of the citrus hues, as well.

The first thing I do, after the holidays, is "shop my home". Before I spend a single penny of those gift cards, burning my pockets, I search the house for items to get me started. I love moving things from other rooms and giving them a new home. Today, I'm sharing the mantel and the coffee table decor.

I've decided to keep the lanterns on the mantel, through the Winter; and return them, to the patio, in the Spring.  I love the cozy feel that they give, especially, when we aren't using the fireplace. After removing all of the holiday decor, I simply added a metal container from the dining room, which was used for my centerpiece there.

I love the color and the scroll detail, which mimics the detail on the mantel.

I simply filled it with hydrangeas, and added pheasant feathers for texture.  (As soon as Dear Hubby came in, he commented on how pretty they are and how wonderful they smell!) As a Southern girl, hydrangeas are my faves! They will look wonderful on the mantel, even as they dry. Then, I added a single candlestick with a mosaic votive holder and my harlequin glass jar, with its fleur de lis top.

As for the coffee table, I kept it pretty simple.  I removed the throw that I scrunched up for the holidays, to let the natural stone of the coffee table show. I arranged two small stacks of my favorite coffee table books, along with some mosaic votive holders, and an urn, dripping with grapes.  The 'centerpiece' is nothing more than an iron bowl and some spheres, with artichokes added for color. I like the mosaic votive holders, on the coffee table, all lit up at night. Very warm and cozy!

That's it for today. Tomorrow, I plan to rearrange my entry table and get a new look going. Hopefully, I'll have something to share in the next day or so!

In the meantime, have a great day; and Happy Decorating!!

What Do You Collect?

Happy New Year, everyone!! I hope you had an enjoyable holiday season!! I have enjoyed a couple of weeks away from blogging, just taking some time to refresh and spend time with my family.  I wasn't sure what I would post about first; but Alison, at The Polohouse, kinda solved that problem for me. Each month, on the first, she poses a new question, regarding our favorites, for us to post about.  This month's question is, "What do you love to collect?"

This was an easy one for me! CROSSES!! I have crosses displayed all over my home.

On my kitchen gallery wall:

On Candles:

On lampshades:

On the upper mantel:

On the lower staircase landing:

On Pillows:

Even on decorative accessories that I purchase...

Like this cradle that I use for my candles and fragrances:

And this picture frame from Kristen of  Kristen's Creations:

See the cute "bling" cross in the middle of the bow?

And for the same reason, I purchased these tassels from Allyson of  No Place Like Our Home...

When I saw the crosses on these fun little tassels, I HAD to have a couple!

I have many more throughout my home; but this is just a small sampling.  I know they are trendy to collect right now; but, for me, they are a constant reminder of what our Lord has done for us!  And what a great way to start a new year!!

Hope you are having a blessed Sunday; and please stop by Alison's blog, The Polohouse, for Favorites On The First.  It is so much fun to see what other bloggers love to collect. You may find some great inspiration for your home; or you may want to link up a collection of your own!

Have a great day...and Happy New Year!!

Happy New Year!

Whew! What a whirlwind of a holiday! I hope all of you have had an enjoyable holiday season!!  I have been enjoying some time off with my family. It's been great having everyone at home!  Even though I've been away from blogging, for the past week or so;  I did not want to miss the opportunity to stop in and wish all of you a Very Happy New Year!!

I started this little blog of mine back in September; and I can honestly say that I have met some of the kindest and most talented ladies on this planet!!  I thank you all for your kind comments, your encouragement, and for embracing me. You all inspire me in so many ways!! I can only imagine all of the creativity to come in 2012...all of the possibilities that a new year brings!

I know that while putting away all of the Christmas decorations, we start to look at our homes with a fresh perspective.  My "little wheels" are spinning away!  In my profile, I describe my style as a gumbo...I love a mix of Old World, Tuscan, and French design...BUT, it only takes one visit to ZGallerie; and I am in sensory overload!! Even though it's a very contemporary store, I find so much inspiration there!  I love incorporating their accessories into my home to keep it from becoming too 'heavy'. Their accents add just enough contemporary style to keep my home fresh. And with a very generous gift card in hand...well, it's a wrap! LOL!

From my family to yours, I wish you a year of love, blessings, peace, passion, creativity and prosperity!

Have A Very Happy and Prosperous New Year!!!
